A great day and a beautiful week on the markets. Volatility (^VIX) is coming down to normal levels, stocks are rebounding in U.S, Europe and we see fresh All Time Highs in China (+9.6 % in a week). As I mentioned yesterday I see two things that makes me nervous and both of them have to do with the theories used for meassuring risks. I will come back to that later because I think this storm is over for now. I hope market participants will go through their deltas, gammas and thetas in this world that is far from constant. Some of these greek letters are not even constant when market is closed. I looked at how many times volatility or vix was used in blogs lately and found out that we had huge one day reversals one week ago and since then is ^vix down 29 %. Maybe the time is here for technical analysis on "key" words from blogs and search engines. Maybe that would give a better reading about mass psychology. Wink

Market update 23 Aug. Print E-mail

Most markets were rather unchanged on thursday. In Japan Nikkei 225 showed a gain of 2.6 % which stands out from the rest of the picture. It was rather much a day off. I am still puzzled about what really is going on. Am kind of sure about that most participants have to find new trading/business models and that will take time. Until they are ready will the old school of participants rule. My feeling is that many in that group has been rather cautious for quite a while so with underlying profits and to them relative values at attractive levels maybe they will consider buying the market. For the ones that consider the trend to be their best friend many have decided to go short the market lately. That could sparkle a rally that I think still is very possible. There are two things that makes me nervous and both of them have to do with the theories used for measuring risk. We do not have random walk, constant interest rates and volatility levels. Writing calls and puts is selling insurance and I hope we don not find to much off that in balance sheets. Darwin rules so good becomes better and bad disappears.

Wei Wei video Print E-mail
Written by Peter Almberg

I was showing the latest video with Wei Wei and the players of FC Barcelona here on the site for about a week. I had an enormous amount of chinese visitors. I am very happy for that and will because of the popularity of Wei Wei install Google translator. It will soon be possible to understand even if you dont speak english. Unfortunately it doesnt work to translate my swenglish to english.

The VIX (volatility index) is down since friday close from 29 to 23. Thats a rather big move and shows us that market participants are turning less nervous. If anybody did take the oppurtunity of selling volatility last week it is rather okey to take nice profits now. I still think that a covered call strategy makes sense but of course it yields less now. One market stands out for the day, week and year. The Chinese mainland market. In Shanghai they trade their stocks at fresh all time highs and up more than 80 % on the year. What puzzles me is that nobody seems to take notice. I think the underlying strength in corporate profits and the "potential" that China represents for the corporate world will take us out of this credit mess stronger than we were before. Darwin rules so good becomes better and bad disappears.
